Abstract
321,684. Thomas, W. F., and Coventry Gearless Motors, Ltd. Aug. 15, 1928. Variable-speed ratchet gearing.-In a reciprocating engine having a crank-shaft 2 and a separate power-shaft 5, driven through one-way clutches 6 by variable-throw oscillating members 1, actuated by the engine pistons, means for varying the throw is operated through friction devices from the crank-shaft. A pair of oppositely acting one-way clutches 6 are connected by rods 9 to a block 7. slidable in a slot in the member 1 to vary the throw, and adjustable by rotation of a shaft 17 which is connected to the blocks 7 by pinions and racks on levers 12, pivoted at 13, and links 10; the shaft 17 is rotated from the crank-shaft 2 through a worm wheel and worm 21, Fig. 2, on a shaft 20 to which is keyed a member 26 which may be reciprocated to engage alternative friction cones 25 with surfaces on the flywheel, the arrangement being such that the higher speed ratio increases the throw of the members 1. If the engine is to drive a motor vehicle, an epicycloidal reversing-gear may be provided and the shafts 5. 2 are connected by a free-wheel drive so that the engine may serve as a brake when going down hill.
