Abstract

154,981. Hussander, A. F. Sept. 2, 1919. Motor power plant.-Comprises transmission systems such as for motor vehicles, boats, and aeroplanes, in which two or more prime movers in pairs connected by differential gearing, drive a common propeller shaft. When four engines are used, as shown, each of the engines 72, 73 drives a sun-wheel of a differential 31a, the planet carrier of which drives a shaft 87 through gearing 85. Similarly the engines 74, 75 drive a shaft 88 through another differential gear 31b, while the two shafts 87, 88 drive the propeller shaft 96 through a third differential gear 36, a friction clutch and flywheel 45, and change speed gearing 42. Each sun-wheel shaft of the various differential gears is prevented from running backwards by the friction ratchet device shown in Fig. 4, so that if any engine stops the drive from the rest is still transmitted through the differential gears. The sun-wheel carries pivoted blocks 63 pressed outwards by springs 67 so that they tend to contact with a fixed rim 55. The normal direction of rotation is such that the blocks slip over the rim, but when the rotation is reversed they bind the rim and stop the shaft. One engine of a pair may be started by speeding up the other to store energy in the flywheel 45 and then slowing the other down when the flywheel will cause the stationary engine shaft to rotate. In a modification, shown in Fig. 8, the differential gear can be locked by a friction clutch 105, to enable one engine to start the other.
