Abstract

1,004,910. Reverse gear; clutch combinations. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 26, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No. 48356/62. Headings F2C and F2D. A planetary reverse gear for ships, in which forward drive is established from an engine shaft 3 and a sun gear 17S through planet pinions 17P mounted un a carrier 17PC, held stationary by engagement of a brake 29 so that a ring gear 17A rotates a filled first fluid coupling 11, in parallel with an engaged friction clutch 41, 43 to drive through gears 7, 5 to a propeller shaft 1, has cushioned establishment of reverse obtained by initially disengaging the clutch 41, 43 and filling a second fluid coupling 13 while maintaining engine revolutions, then after slowing of the propeller, throttling down the engine, emptying the fluid coupling 11 and, after a further pause, engaging a brake 39 to station the ring gear 17A &c. Next the brake 31 is released and the engine run up to speed, so that reverse is established through the sun gear 17S, the pinions 17P planetating in the now-stationed ring gear 17A, the fluid coupling 13 and the gears 7, 5. If two engines are to power the single propeller shaft 1, a second train of gears &c. 17, 7 &c. may duplicate the train shown and drive the gear 5.
