Abstract
550,261. Friction clutches. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd., BRIGGS, T. H., and BRIGGS, W. H. July 23, 1941, No. 9312. [Class 80 (ii)] A multi-plate friction clutch comprises the combination of a spring-loaded clutch assembly adapted to be controlled by the user, a second coaxially arranged clutch assembly and means for controlling the second clutch assembly in response to angular movements of the driven member of the first clutch assembly relative to an adjacent part of the second clutch assembly. A sprocket wheel b transmits motion to a member a into which projects a hollow shaft c to which is secured a driven member d of the clutch. This member is splined at e for the engagement of clutch plates f, and the member a is notched at g to receive clutch plates h. The plates f, h are adapted to be acted upon by a pressure plate j slidable in notches k in the member d and adapted to be moved by a short ring m having a face cam n adapted to co-operate with a cam o on a sleeve p rotatably but non- slidably mounted on the shaft c and having driving connection with the driven member r of another clutch assembly. This comprises plates s splined to member r and plates t engaging the notches in the member a. This clutch is normally engaged by springs x acting upon a pressure plate v and may be actuated by a rod w passing through the shaft c. The clutch s, t is normally in action, but when increased resistance is encountered the relative motion of the parts r, m causes axial movement of the plate j and the engagement of the other clutch.
