Abstract
726,252. Change-speed gearing. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. April 2. 1953 [May 17, 1952; March 13, 1953], No. 9275/53. Class 80 (2). In change-speed gearing for motor vehicles with parallel input and output shafts 30, 35, high-speed drive is through a friction clutch 32, shaft 33 and a pair of gears 34, 34', while low-speed drive is directly through a hydraulic torque converter 36, 37, 40, tubular shaft 41 and another pair of gears, one of which latter has a one-way connection with its shaft. As shown, a synchronized dog clutch 42 is provided between tubular shaft 41 and a tubular shaft 43 carrying gears 44, 45 and 46 meshing with gears 44<SP>1</SP>, 45<SP>1</SP> and, through an idler for reverse, a gear 46', the gears 44', 45' being loose on shaft 35 and adapted to be selectively clutched to a member 47 in one-way connection with shaft 35 by a splined sleeve 49. By extra travel of sleeve 49, the one-way connection may be locked. The clutch 42 comprises teeth 54, Fig. 5, on shaft 43 normally engaged by teeth 53 on a spring- loaded piston 51 in splined engagement with a member 41a secured to shaft 41, the teeth being disengageable by supplying pressure fluid. A friction synchronizing sleeve 55 is splined on member 51, with a ball detent 57.
