Abstract
619,866. Reversing gearing; clutches. FAIRFIELD SHIPBUILDING & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and DAVIS, A. W. March 7, 1946, Nos. 7123 and 18334. [Class 80 (ii)] Reversing gearing for ship propulsion comprises a double hydraulic coupling 42, 43, operable to couple a high-speed driving shaft 10 to a low speed propeller shaft 11 through either an astern pinion 30 or a double reduction layshaft gearing 15, 32, 33, 34. The astern pinion shaft 13 and the primary ahead pinion 15 are arranged as co-axial extensions of the driving shaft 10, the pinion 15 having a central quill shaft 12 directly connected to the two driving members 26, 27 of the double coupling. A sliding dog clutch member 22 connects a clutch member 20 on the driving shaft 10 with a similar member 16 on the quill shaft 12 at all times and is selectively engageable with a clutch member 17 rigid with the ahead pinion 15 to byepass the ahead fluid coupling for normal running. Spring loaded friction pads 58 are provided on the members 17 to assist in the shock free engagement of the dog teeth. The double hydraulic coupling comprises the two driving members 26, 27 rigid with the shaft 12 and the two driven members 28, 29 rigid respectively with the ahead and astern pinions, oil for the operation of the couplings being supplied along the hollow shafts and being exhausted from the inoperative coupling. Two slide valves 51, 52, selectively control the outlet of oil from the couplings and are moved axially by the rotation of a camplate 54 which engages the slots 55 in the bars 53 connecting the valves. Thus by actuation of the valves 51, 52 and the clutch sleeve 22 the gearing provides double reduction ahead positive drive for normal use, double reduction ahead through the fluid coupling for manoeuvring, and single reduction reverse through a fluid coupling. According to the first Provisional Specification the fluid coupling may be either electric, hydraulic or pneumatic.
