Abstract
599,800. Change-speed gearing. RUBBRA, A. A., and GARDINER, T. E. G. Nov. 7, 1944, No. 21839. [Class 80(ii)] In a change-speed gear having a plurality of layshafts each of which has associated therewith a centrifugally-actuated clutch operable to connect the driving and driven shafts through gear trains, the step-up from one speed ratio to the next higher is accompanied by the employment of at least one more clutch connection and at the highest speed ratio torque is transmitted by the driving elements of all the clutches. As shown, applied to a change-speed gear for supercharger drives giving three forward speeds, the driving and driven shafts are co-axial and have three layshafts 3, 4 and 5 symmetrically disposed about them. Each layshaft is permanently driven at the same speed from a driving gear 6 and carries a pair of loose gears 13, 11; 20, 17 and 21, 18 respectively, either of each pair being alternatively clutchable to its layshaft by two-way centrifugal clutches 15, 23, 24 respectively whose mutual operation is so arranged that power is transmitted in low gear .through the layshaft 3 only via the gear 11 meshing a large driven gear 12, in medium gear through two layshafts 4, 5 via the gears 17, 18 meshing an intermediate driven gear 19 and in high gear through all three layshafts via the gears 13, 20, 21 meshing a small driven gear 14. The centrifugal clutches, which may be of the type described in Specification 551,002 having bobs which are selectively biassed from a neutral position into one or other of two operative positions, are controlled by a three - position hydraulic ram 25 acting through cam and follower linkworks 28, 30 and 29, 31, the latter selectively controlling clutch 15 only and the former clutches 23, 24 simultaneously. The followers 29, 31 are provided with double arms to ensure effective locking of the clutches in their neutral positions. Specifications 572,93G and 573,713, [both in Group XXIX], also are referred to.
