Abstract

547,711. Power plant. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 5, 1941, No. 2985. Convention date, March 8, 1940. [Class 7 (ii)] In a power plant comprising at least two supercharged two-stroke internal-combustion engines driving a vehicle or ship through gearing, an exhaust-driven turbo-compressor supplying at least two of the engines is coupled through a transmission device to the driving- gearing so that the supercharger is kept running at a high speed when the engines are being manipulated for manoeuvring the vehicle or ship. Fig. 1 shows four engines 1.. 4 driving a shaft 6 through gearing 5, a compressor 7 being driven by an exhaust turbine 8, and also connected through a shaft 9 and transmission device 10 to the gearing 5. The transmission 10 comprises two magnetic, hydraulic, or mechanical couplings arranged so that, with low loads on the engines, the driving of the supercharger is assisted by the engines driving through the transmission 10 and gearing 5, while, when the load is great, power is transmitted from the supercharger shaft to the shaft 6 or the engines, or both. Where reversible engines are used, the transmission 10 is provided with two couplings coming respectively into use when the plant is driving ahead or astern, so that the supercharger is always kept running in the same direction.
