Abstract
535,530. Engine installations. GILJAM, J. B. April 6, 1940, No. 6257. [Class 7 (ii)] To ensure a constant output from each of the engine cylinders under all running conditions an installation comprises a number of units of different output which are coupled to, or disconnected from, a propeller or other power transmission shaft in accordance with the speed or load requirements of the vessel or machine to be driven. In the arrangement shown in the figure, three units having five, eight and twelve cylinders respectively are coupled together by clutches 1 and 2 the unit A being connected directly to a propeller shaft 4. At low speeds the unit A is in use alone ; at cruising speed the unit A is coupled to the unit B and at maximum speeds the unit C is included. The fuel pumps are driven by shafts 6, 7 and 8 which are disconnected at 9, and 10 when the corresponding units are out of commission.
