Abstract

The marine diesel engine has two engine units arranged parallel, the bottom sections (2) of which are fixed to a single bearing plate (3). Each engine unit has a number of upright cylinders and a crankshaft (21). The intake pipe (4), the exhaust pipe (5) and the transmission, which has a single drive shaft for the connection to a propeller shaft, are common to the two engine units. Such a marine diesel engine has both smaller dimensions and a smaller weight than conventional engines of the same power. It has a more economical fuel consumption and permits a larger load capacity of the vessel.
