Abstract
1362316 Power plant; supercharging engine mountings F AMIOT 10 Aug 1972 [23 Aug 1971] 37398/72 Headings F1B, F1M and F1Q A power plant for vehicles or vessels includes a first internal combustion engine unit 1 with a second internal combustion engine unit 2 superposed thereon, cylinders of the first and second units being arranged in opposed horizontal pairs and the engine units being coupled to a common output shaft. Each engine unit includes at least two separate cylinder blocks 1a, 1b or 2a, 2b disposed end to end and having separate crankshafts, coupling means being provided for releasably coupling the crank-shafts of adjacent cylinder blocks in the same unit for simultaneous rotating thereof. A detachable panel 6, 7 is provided on each cylinder block whereby after removal of the panel access to the crank-shaft is possible. The detachable panel of each cylinder block of the second unit is formed by a plate 7 which closes an aperture in the top wall of the crank case. The detachable panel 6 of each cylinder block of the first unit is formed by an oil retaining casing closing an aperture in the bottom wall of a crank case of the cylinder block. The supercharging unit comprises four independent turbo-compressors 9 disposed at the rear end of the plant. Each turbo-compressor comprises firstly a turbine 9a powered by the exhaust gases from the corresponding cylinder line fed to the turbine by two manifolds 11 respectively serving the two cylinder blocks of the line and secondly a compressor 9b feeding the line of cylinders through a cooling radiator 12 leading to an intake manifold 13. The plant may be supported on resilient buffers (not shown). To facilitate removal of the plant a top plate is connected in a readily detachable manner to a resilient body by means of a back plate permanently secured to the resilient body. The readily detachable fixing is produced by means of horizontal pins associated with the top plate and the back plate.
