Abstract

865,351. Cylinders. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 10, 1959 [Feb. 24, 1958], No. 4586/59. Addition to 865,350. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXII] An internal combustion engine 10 has a cylinder block 12 having a pair of angularly disposed banks 14 and 16 of cylinders 18. Each bank has a cylinder head 22 bolted to a face 20 on the block 12, and a carburetter 32 feeds an intake manifold 26 secured to the cylinder heads 22. Each cylinder head 22 (Fig. 2) comprises a lower member 36 bonded by a thermosetting synthetic plastic material (Group XXII) to an upper member 38 both members being die cast from an alloy of aluminium or magnesium. Rocker arms 67 are pivotally mounted on the upper member 38 either on a shaft or on the ends of studs 69. A cavity 74 is provided in the cylinder head for a coolant. In a modification, a cylinder head 104 (Fig. 4) comprises members 106, 120, 121 and a cover member 124 all adhesively bonded together to provide the necessary inlet and exhaust passages, a coolant cavity 130 and spaces for the push rods. A rocker arm shaft 136 is mounted on the cover member by a bracket 137 and bolts 138 secure the cylinder head assembly in position and compress all the joints together.
