Abstract

Pistons; connecting-rods.-In order to improve air or water cooling, and to secure compactness, the cylinders of air-craft or other internal-combustion engines are made of stream line, elliptical, oval or ovoid form in cross section, with pistons of corresponding form. The piston, shown in inverted plan in Fig. 4, may have cross ribs for strengthening and cooling. In order to steady the piston the gudgeon-pin bearings are placed wide apart, and two connecting-rods may be employed. In the latter case, a third bearing is preferably interposed between the bearings 10. In a radial-cylinder engine the piston skirt is cut away or bent back as shown at 12<a> and 12b, in order to prevent fouling of adjacent pistons. The skirt may be similarly cut away to prevent fouling of the balance weight or other parts. Specification 102,186 [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of] is referred to.
