478,717. Cylinders. BUGATTI, J. July 23, 1936, Nos. 20459 and 20460. Convention dates, July 23,1935 and May 9,1936. [Class 7 (ii)] In a multicylinder engine wherein two cylinders or cylinder blocks 1 form a V or are inclined at any angle up to 180‹, the cylinders &c. are provided with integral extensions 3 defined by axially-directed rectilinear projection of the cylinders &c. towards a common crankshaft, and the extensions are formed with complementary end surfaces adapted to be joined in a plane 6 including or parallel with the axis of the crankshaft, the surfaces having complementary cut-away portions adapted to form housings for crank - shaft bearings 5 when assembled,and the extensions having further cut-away portions to clear the crank-and-rod mechanism in its rotation. The cylinders may be connected together by bolts 7, 8, which may pass through the cylinders or the extensions. Also the extensions may be surrounded by collars, and the cylinders may be clamped against an intermediate yoke 10 by bolts 9. A number of groups of twin cylinders may be provided. in which case the yoke 10 is prolonged. An intermediate ring may be interposed between the contacting surfaces at the plane of assembly 6. An X-engine and an opposed-cylinder engine are described also. Specifications 100,298, 220,284, [both in Class 7 (ii)], and 446,148 are referred to.
