[Also in Division F2] In a multi-cylinder Vee engine having a number of cylinders which is a multiple of four, the included angle # m , Fig. 1, between the two rows of cylinders is equal to the average of the theoretically optimum included angles #z for a series of engines with multiples of four cylinders in Vee arrangement, and the crankshaft has axially subdivided crank pin portions angularly displaced about the crankshaft axis, adjacent pin portions 2, 3, Fig. 6, being angularly displaced by the angular difference between the average included angle # m and the optimum included angle #z. Standardized crankcases may be used for 8, 12, and 16 cylinder Vee engines or any combination of such engines. In modifications, the intermediate cheek between crankpin portions may serve as a connecting rod guide or may be omitted or the crankpin may be subdivided into three portions, one connecting rod from each pair of coplanar pistons co-operating by means of a bifurcated bearing with the two outer crankpin portions and the other connecting rod co-operating with the centre crankpin portion.
