Abstract

560,287. Four-stroke engines and engine details. DAVEY, PAXMAN, & CO., Ltd., and PAXMAN, E. P. July 14, 1942, No. 9779. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] An engine comprising two mutually inclined banks of cylinders disposed above a common crank-shaft 16 is constructed from a crank-case having three plane joint faces 18 ... 20 on its upper surface, cylinder blocks 1 adapted to be bolted on the faces 19, 20, a cam box assembly 22 adapted to be bolted on the face 18, and cylinder head units 4 having plane joint faces adapted to be fixed to corresponding faces 3 on the cylinder blocks. As shown, the crank-case is a single casting comprising girders 9 ... 13 connected at intervals by vertical webs 14 with strengthening ribs 15. Reinforcing webs 17 are provided at the base and openings 31 large enough for the insertion or removal of a piston, connecting-rod &c. are provided with covers 32. The interchangeable cylinder blocks 1 each comprise three cylinders, and two cylinder blocks are bolted together centrally of the engine and surmounted by a single cylinderhead unit 4. The latter is provided with airinlet valves 5, air cleaners 41, combustion chambers 6, fuel injectors 42, exhaust valves 7, &c. The height of each cylinder is such that the water cooling space 27 extends substantially to the junction with the crank-case, and a cylinder liner 28 reinforced by a ring 29 projects into the crank-case. The cam box 22 bolted to the central horizontal face 18 houses a camshaft 23 and rockers 24, while its removable cover 25 supports fuel pumps 26, timing-gear and governors. Push rods 49 connecting the rockers. 24 to valve tappets 40 pass freely through flexible or resilient sleeves 50 connecting openings in the cam box, cylinder blocks and cylinder head units, as described in Specification 557,237, to avoid the need for accurate alignment of these openings.
