Abstract

563,518. Multi-cylinder engines. DAVEY, PAXMAN, & CO., Ltd., and PAXMAN, E. P. March 10, 1943, No. 3889. [Class 7 (ii)] A multi-cylinder internal-combustion engine of vertical or horizontal type has a crank-case provided with joint faces each with component surfaces all lying in one plane, a cam box assembly being secured to one joint face and a number of cylinder blocks to the other, the blocks having cylinder head units, also with uniplanar joint faces, secured thereto. In a six-cylinder engine, two three-cylinder blocks, Fig. 2, are arranged end to end on the crankcase with the joint surfaces 4 lying in a common plane. The upper surfaces of the blocks which receive cylinder-head units 6 are also arranged in a common plane 5. Each cylinder block has end lugs 2 adapted to receive connecting bolts. Further bolts 8 passing through lugs disposed in recesses between the cylinders secure the blocks to the crank-case. Interconnected water jackets 12 communicate through spaces 62, 63, 64 with a manifold 65 which mav cool the exhaust manifold 66. The one-piece crankcase 11 comprises girders 15 ... 18. Fig. 1 connected at intervals by ribs 19, 21. Further reinforcement is provided by long bolts 22 extending laterally through the crank-case. Intermediate bearing members 24 are fitted in recesses 23 in the underside of the crank-case. A machined joint face 25 supports the cylinder blocks and has apertures to receive projecting cylinder-liners 27 which are strengthened by a ring 34, as described in Specification 556,987. A second joint face 30 supports a cam-box 31 which may be constructed as described in Specification 560,289, and is secured by studs 32. The box contains the cam-shaft and rockers and carries fuel pumps, timing-gear and governors. The connecting-rods and pistons may be removed through doors 35 in the sides of the crank-case. Each cylinder block is provided with a cylinder head 6 formed as a complete sub-assembly with valves, valve-gear and other accessories for attachment to the block by bolts 36 passing through tubular parts 46. The push-rods 70 pass through passages 45. The assembly is completed by a cover unit 47 having joint surfaces all lying in one plane. In a modification, Fig. 7, the joint face 50 for the cam-box is in the same plane as that for the cylinder blocks. An additional crankpit member 51 reinforced by webs 52 is provided and is secured to the crank-case by bolts 55 or 58. The bearing-supports 61 are secured to the crank pit 51. In the adaptation to a horizontal engine, Fig. 8, a joint face is provided on the part 15 for one or more feet 67 and the member 17 is secured to a second foot 69, the feet being secured to a suitable foundation. Specifications 557,237 and 560,287 are also referred to.
