Cylinders, construction of and cooling.- The cylinder a of an engine in which the pistons move in opposite directions is attached to the frame at one point only to allow for axial expansion. Three forms are illustrated, differing from each other in the arrangement of the water spaces and in the location of the joints between the frame and the cylinder. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the exhaust ports n, between two members, are shaped to expand without affecting the piston movement.
