Abstract
167,775. Behn, A., and Schmitt, J. G. Aug. 12, 1920. [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Four-stroke-cycle engines; crank chambers; driving-gear.-In engines having pairs of pistons 29, 30 acted upon by one impulse, the cylinders 21-24 are arranged in pairs, and the upper pistons 30 of each pair are connected by rods 49 to a hollow gudgeon 48 common to the two pistons. The gudgeon drives the main crank shaft 16 through three connecting-rods 28, 49<1> and is guided by rollers 51 sliding on bearing surfaces 50<1>. The ends of the gudgeon are closed by caps 53 held on by a through bolt. The lower pistons 29 are directly connected to the crank shaft. The crank case has an integral lug 15 to enable the engine to be centred on the vehicle to which it is to be attached. Cylinders, cooling.-The cylinders and valve chests are surrounded by interconnected water jackets; the circulating pump 77, Fig. 2, is driven by a shaft 85, which also drives a magneto 83 and generator 84. The pump is connected with the bottom of the radiator and with a manifold 80; a second manifold 81 connects with the tops of the water jackets and the top of the radiator. Each valve chest 'contains the cam-actuated inlet and exhaust valves for two cylinders, the valve chest being a separate casting from the cylinder.
