Abstract
687,687. Radial-cylinder engines; cooling cylinders; spray carburetters; mounting magnetos; valve-gear. BENELLI, G. Jan. 15, 1951 [Jan. 24, 1950], No. 1075/51. Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), 7 (iv) and 7 (vi). In a four-stroke four-cylinder engine, each cylinder is axially displaced with respect to all the others and the cylinders are disposed radially in fan shape at substantially 60 degrees intervals to form, as shown, two interlaced pairs I, 11 and 111, IV respectively each having a V-angle of substantially 120 degrees. Each cylinder may be fed by an individual carburetter, or each pair by a carburetter situated at the mid-point of a mutual admission pipe 16, but, as shown, a single carburetter situated at the mid-point 18 of a pipe 17 joining the mid-points of the pipes 16 feeds all the cylinders. The engine may be supercharged by one or more compressors. The cylinders may be water cooled, or air cooled by a crankshaft fan 7 or by their movement through the air when the engine is mounted in a vehicle. The pistons of each cylinder pair are so interconnected that one is at top dead centre when the other is at bottom dead centre. Each cylinder pair may have an individual camshaft 21 operating overhead valve rockers 19 through tappets 20, the shafts 21 being connected at their inner ends by chain gearing. Alternatively, each cylinder may be provided with a chain- or gear-driven overhead camshaft, or a single gear-driven camshaft may operate the valves of all the cylinders. A magneto 11 is crankshaft-driven by a belt 9.
