Abstract

532,275. Valve gear ; casings ; cooling. HUGH, P. G., NORTH, O. D., HALL, C. R., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. Aug. 24, 1939, No. 24321. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine with valves 5, 6 arranged in V-fashion in a dome-shaped combustion chamber and the spark-plug 20 between them, the valves are actuated from a cam shaft 16 located high up on the cylinder block, by means of push rods 5c, 6c and rockers 11, 12 mounted in a cover 29 constructed to leave a central space for free access to the spark-plug. In a multicylinder engine, the cover 29 is formed with portions shown in section in Fig. 3. The rockers 12 of the exhaust valves of adjacent cylinders are arranged in pairs in compartments 6b, and the rockers 11 of the inlet valves of intermediate cylinders are similarly arranged in pairs in compartments 5b, but the rockers 11 of the inlet valves of the end cylinders are arranged singly in compartments 5b as shown at the bottom of Fig. 3. The compartments 5b, 6b are shaped to leave spaces 22 for access to the spark-plugs 20. Cooling-water may pass from the cylinder jackets into the head, leaving by an exit 25, and other water may flow directly from a pipe 25a at the exhaust-port side to the exit 25. In the case of diesel engines, fuel injectors replace the spark-plugs.
