[Class 80 (i)] [See also Group XXVIII] Relates to phase-adjusting gearing of the kind comprising two oppositely cut helical gears 12, 13 mounted on independent parallel or co-axial shafts 1, 2 and engaging pinions 14, 15, one or both of which are movable axially with their common shaft 16. According to the invention, the axial movement of the shaft is effected by a hydraulic motor 23. As shown, the motor 19 drives the connecting rods 10, 11 of a pump with interconnected cylinders through a crank-shaft, the relative phase between the parts 1, 2 of which is determined by the helical gearing 12, 13, 14, 15. The servo-motor piston 23 is controlled by a valve 25, which connects a pressure inlet 26 to one side or the other of the piston 23 by a passage 27 or 28, while connecting the other side to exhaust by the passage 28 or 27 and a port 33 or 32 respectively. The valve 25 may be operated by changes in the operating condition which call for a change of phase angle.
