Abstract
482,568. Operating clutches ; indicating synchronism of clutch parts. DEUTSCHE SCHIFFUND MASCHINENBAU AKT.-GES. July 23, 1937, No. 20437. Convention date, July 24, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] Means for indicating when the parts 18, 19 Fig. 1, of a claw clutch are rotating in synchronism and are in register, so as to permit engagement without shock, comprises a pointer 16 geared to the planet carrier 13 of a differential toothed gear, the sun gears 7 and 8 of which are positively geared to the clutch shafts 1 and 2 so as to rotate in opposite directions. The arrangement is such that one revolution of the pointer 16 corresponds to one revolution of the shafts 1 and 2 relative to one another, so that when the pointer is at rest opposite a fixed mark 17 the clutch parts are in register and in synchronism. Engagement and disengagement of the clutch is effected, through a pivoted yoke 20 engaging the sliding claw member 18, by a double-acting steam, air, or gas motor 24, 25, Figs. 2 and 3, controlled by a slide valve 6. The latter is interconnected with the piston rod 23 through a lever 32 so as to be returned to mid-position at the end of either stroke of the piston 24. The rod 23 is connected to a second piston 27 working in a cylinder 28 controlled by a slide valve 29 connected to the valve 26. The inlet and exhaust sides of the valve 29 are connected, respectively, to the discharge and suction sides of a hand oil pump 30. During either stroke of the piston 24, oil is displaced from one end of the cylinder 28 to the other through the pump 30, but towards the end of the stroke a dash-pot action is set up as the valve 29 moves towards mid-position. The pistons can be locked in either end position by engaging one or other of two pins 33 with the crosshead 34. These pins are operated by a piston 35, to either face of which oil can be supplied, on operation of the pump 30, by means of a control valve 36. The pins can also be retracted by means of a hand wheel 37. If the supply of steam &c. fails, the clutch can be actuated, on moving the valve 29 in the appropriate direction, either by operating the pump 30 or by manually rotating a spindle 39 which is in threaded engagement with the rod 23. An additional hand oil pump 30<1>, which may be located on the deck of a ship in the case of a marine installation, has valve-controlled suction and delivery pipes connected to the two ends of the cylinder 28. Thus, on opening these valves, the clutch may be disengaged by operation of the pump 30<1>, a spring-opened valve 44 in the pipe connecting the exhaust side or the valve 29 to the pump 30 being closed by pressure communicated from the pump 30<1> through a pipe- 41. A cock 36<1> enables the locking pins 33 to be operated by the pressure from the pump 30<1>.
