Abstract

561,295. Reversing. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. June 10, 1942, No. 7916. Convention date, July 5, 1941. [Class 7 (v)] In a reversing mechanism for engines with two or more cam-shafts which when reversing are turned through different angles with respect to the crank-shaft, a cam-shaft 1 is driven from the crank-shaft 3 through gearing 5 and is angularly adjusted by a fluid-pressure servomotor 6, 7, while a cam-shaft 14 is driven from the shaft 1 through transmission mechanism including a member 8 displaced axially by a fluid-pressure piston 10 in order to give the shaft 12 an angular displacement relative to the shaft 1. The pressure spaces at each side of the piston 10 are connected to those of the servomotor 6, 7. As shown, the cam-shaft 1 actuates fuel pumps 2 and the cam-shaft 14 actuates control valves 16 for the starting valves 17. The servomotor 6, 7 comprises rotary pistons 7 movable by fluid pressure into engagement with driving abutments in a gear 6 driven from the gear 5 on the crank-shaft. The camshaft 14 is driven from the shaft 1 through bevel gearing 13 and helical gears 9, 11, the gear 8 being connected to the piston 10. This and the servomotor 6, 7 are actuated by lubricating oil or other pressure fluid admitted through pipes 25, 26 from a reversing valve 24. In modifications, (a) the piston 16 is arranged to displace the helical gear 11 by means of a bell-crank lever ; (b) the cam-shaft 14 is in line with the cam-shaft 1 and is angularly adjusted from the piston 10 by means of a pin engaging a helical slot.
