Abstract

519,891. Steam engine valve gears. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND 'MASCHINENFABRIK. Oct. 6, 1938, No. 28965. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1937. [Class 122 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In vehicles of the kind propelled by a plurality of steam engines, the valve gears of all the engines are adjusted in successive stages to various cut-offs by a single control member in such a manner that as the control member is advanced in steps the valve gears are alternately set (1) to the same cut-offs for all engines and (2) to cut-off differing in phase. Thus the total power output of all the engines can be graduated in a larger number of stages than that provided by the number of cut-off stages. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the inlet valves 1, 2 of two steam engines are operated by slidable cam shafts 3 driven from the engine through gears 3a and having cams with three stages O, I, II acting on rollers 4 on the valve stems. The cam shafts are slid, to bring the various cam stages into use, by means of rollers 13, 13a acting through fluid-pressure servomotors 8, 6 these rollers being engaged by slidable stepped cams 14, 14a controlled by a hand lever 15. In the position shown in Fig. 1, the rollers 13, 13a are both on the step I of the cams 14, 14a and both valves 1 have the same cut-off, but the cams 14, 14a differ in phase, by the distance a equal to half the length 2a of a step on each cam. Thus, when the lever 15 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, the roller 13a is still on step I but roller 13 is on step II and valve 1 has a different cut-off to valve 2. The engines may be arranged in groups of one or more, there being as many gradations to each cut-off stage as there are groups. The cams 14, 14a may be slid by screw-and-nut gear 17, Fig. 3, controlled by a single hand-wheel and bevel gears 18, or they may be replaced by rotary cams. The engine cam gear 3, 3a may be that described in Specification 245,413, [Class 122 (ii)]
