Abstract
577,949. Aircraft power plant. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and OWNER, F. M. Dec. 24, 1941, No. 16654. [Classes 4 and 114] A power plant for aircraft comprises an internal-combustion engine and airscrew supplemented by a jet propulsion unit, and the cooling air from the engine or radiator and the exhaust gases from the engine are continuously discharged through an opening in the aircraft through which the high velocity jet from the jet propulsion unit is directed. The jet propulsion unit includes a compressor, a combustion chamber and a turbine for driving the compressor. The rear end of an engine nacelle is shown housing a jet propulsion unit 11 discharging from a tube 12 and nozzle 13 through an opening 14 in the cowling. The nozzle 13 is carried by a sliding sleeve 17 to adjust the annular space at the opening. The ejector action draws the cooling air from the engine or radiator, or other vitiated air, through the annular passage 20, and the exhaust gases are led through pipes 16 to the vicinity of the opening, or, as shown in chain lines, into the tube 12. In a modification, an aerofoil-section sleeve is spaced from and surrounds the end of the sleeve 17. The air cools the jet propulsion unit when the latter is in use and keeps it sufficiently warm when not in use to facilitate restarting.
