595,973. Gas turbines ; motor power plant. RINGHAM, A. July 12, 1945, No. 17787. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] An exhaust-actuated turbine x is mounted on an internal-combustion engine shaft driving directly a fan supplying charge to a jetpropulsion unit 7. Air passing through cones b in a propeller is fed by passages c to a chamber i in the hub from which it passes by a pipe 19, controlled by a valve e operated hydraulically, to cylinder ports o. Exhaust valve springs t are tensioned so that the valves open on firing, and high-pressure exhaust passes by pipes w to the turbine. The valves 1 are held open by arms 17 which are spring-pressed under heads u until they are moved back by the. engagement of push-rods 14 on their sloping heads: Fuel is fed by nozzles 12 on to an annular baffle 10 heated by exhaust flowing through pipes 11 and it is mixed with air supplied by the fan 1 and controlled by flap valves 6, the mixture being ignited by sparking-plugs 8.
