Abstract
704,678. Gas turbine plant. BUDWORTH, D. D. Feb. 6, 1952 [Feb. 6, 1951], No. 2933/51. Class 110 (3). [Also in Groups XII and XXVII] In a gas turbine plant comprising an annular combustion chamber 19, 20 having fuel injection means 22 and a centrifugal compressor 6 and an inward radial flow turbine 24 mounted on a common shaft 15, the shaft is journalled in bearings situated at a point remote from the combustion chamber and overhangs said bearings and the turbine is concentrically arranged within or adjacent to the combustion chamber and is connected to an output shaft 33 through suitable gearing. The plant comprises a casing 1 having end plates 2, 10 and a partition 3 for dividing it into a gear casing 4 and a compressor casing 5. Air is drawn through ports 7 and guide vanes 8 into the compressor 6 and is discharged through a diffuser 17 into the combustion chamber. The fuel injectors 22 are offset with respect to kidney-shaped holes 48 in the member 20. The products of combustion together with air entering the member 20 through ports 21 are fed to the turbine 24 through guide nozzles 25. The turbine and compressor units are pinned together as shown or are formed integral with one another. Oil is fed to the gearing through pipes 40, 41; a branch pipe 42 supplying the bearings of the shaft 15. Starting is effected by driving the shaft 33 through a free wheel clutch and a sprocket and chain driving mechanism 36, 37, 38 having a starting dog 39. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the air supplied to the combustion chamber may be preheated in one or more heat exchangers.
