[Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Two engines mounted in tandem longitudinally of an aeroplane drive airscrews or sets of airs crews disposed laterally on either side of the engines, each engine, and each airscrew or set of airs crews being capable of being clutched to and unclutched from driving gear common to the engines and airscrews. Fig. 1 shows two radial cylinder, air-cooled engines 13, 14 mounted in a chamber 24 in the fuselage and driving through a gearbox 15 two transverse'shafts 16, 17 arranged within the wings and driving two airscrew shafts 20, 21. The chamber 24 is supplied with air through two ducts 25, 26 and the cooling air and exhaust gases are discharged through rear ducts 27, 28. In larger machines two such units may be mounted one in each wing within its thickness. The gearing for driving both airscrews or sets of airscrews from either or both engines of the tandem pair and the means for disconnecting either airscrew or set of airscrews from the driving mechanism are all as described in Specification 547,426. The air supply arrangements are described in Specifications 547,404, 547,405, 547,406, and the bevel gearing between the shafts 16, 17 and the airscrew shafts 20, 21 is described in Specification 546,630, [Group XXXIII]. A pair of counter-rotating airscrews may be used in place of each single airscrew, or the airscrew may be arranged on the trailing edge of the wing, or both tractor and pusher airscrews may be driven from the shafts 16, 17. Should the airscrews overrun either engine, that engine is disengaged, unless it is running at low throttle, in which case the driving connection is maintained.
