Abstract

352,428. Aircraft propelling means. CATTANEO, G., 89, Via Monte Rosa, Milan, Italy. Dec. 31, 1929, No. 39862. Convention date, Jan. 2. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 4.] An aeroplane propeller is driven through helical or bevel gear d, e, f from one or two engines a, a<1> having their cylinders in line, V or W formation, and arranged transversely of the wing within the thickness of its leading edge. A third or a third and a fourth engine arranged with their axes vertically may drive the same propeller shaft. Where two, three or four engines are used an additional propeller at the trailing edge of the wing may have its shaft driven by a bevel wheel opposite to the wheel f and gearing with the pinions d, e. The propeller shafts may be driven at the same speed as the engine shafts or at a reduced speed. The cylinders may project beyond the wing contour or they may be enclosed by a cowling c provided with slits for the entrance and exit of cooling air.
