Abstract

462,682. Four - stroke engines; driving - gear. SCOTT, B. D. Sept. 12, 1935, No. 25372. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In a multi-cylinder aircraft engine, pistons in opposed cylinders 11, 12 are connected by single connection rods to crank-shafts 14, 15 which rotate in opposite directions and are geared to a 'single propeller shaft 21, or to coaxially-arranged propeller shafts. The shafts 14, 15 are either geared together directly or through a gear wheel 20 on the shaft 21 and an idler gear wheel 23. The axes of the cylinders, crank-shafts and propeller shafts may be in the same plane, or the shafts may be slightly offset. In a modification two sets of opposed cylinders are arranged in parallel planes, the crank-shafts being geared to a central propeller shaft so that the three shafts are in the same plane and the crank-shafts rotate in opposite directions. In a further modification each of the opposed cylinders is replaced by two or more cylinders arranged fanwise, their connecting rods being coupled by single connecting rods to the oppositely rotating crank-shafts. The engine being flat is especially suitable for building into the wings or fuselage of an aeroplane, and an arrangement is shown in which the engine cowlings project forward of the front line of 'the wings and present a stream-lined surface which does not increase the drag of the machine. Specification 431,687 is referred to.
