Abstract
506,645. Propelling aircraft. ELLIOTT, A. C. Nov. 30, 1937, No. 33087. [Class 4] An aircraft, engine, mounted in the aircraft structure by means of trunnion pins at each end coaxial or parallel with the crankshaft, drives a propeller and shaft/rigidly mounted in the structure independently of' the engine, through a universally-jointed transmission, resilient means being provided for resisting torque reaction of the engine. The trunnion pins may,be resiliently mounted and frictional or hydraulic means provided to damp engine vibrations. As shown, an engine 5 is mounted in a wing 21 by means of trunnions 7<1> coaxial with the crankshaft and carried in rubber bearings in the spars 7, S. Torque arms 10 are provided connected at 13, 14 to subsidiary fore-and-aft spars 11, 12 by rubber or springs. The arms may be resiliently connected to the engine. The airscrew 15 is mounted in bearings carried by a housing 16 supported by an outrigger 17 from the spar 7 and is connected to the crankshaft by a shaft 18 and flexible or universal joints 19, 20.. A reduction gear may be interposed between the airscrew and crankshafts. Specification 498,224 is referred to.
