Abstract

607,924. Helicopters. POELVOORDE, P. J. VAN. April 27, 1946, No. 12745. [Class 4] A helicopter comprises a supporting and propelling unit 1 consisting of an engine and a propeller with blades rigid with the hub (or a pair of co-axial contra - rotating propellers) and universally mounted on the fuselage 2 to ensure the stability of the machine and to enable the propeller to be tilted forwardly to furnish a propulsive force. The universal mounting comprises a longitudinally disposed journal 7 beneath a transversely disposed journal 6. Fig. 5 shows an aircraft provided with a supporting and propelling unit 17, including a jet motor, at the end of each of a pair of wings 9, the units being in line with the centre of gravity of the machine. A number of such propelling units may be mounted at intervals along the fuselage. The propeller or propellers may be by worm gearing.
