Abstract

757,279. Convertible aircraft. MINISTERIO DA AERONAUTICA. Aug. 30, 1954, No. 25147/54. Class 4. In an aircraft having supporting wings in which propellers are swung about axes transverse to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft to enable it to take off vertically as a helicopter and then fly as a normal aircraft the wings 2 each carry a boom 3 extended forward of the wings to provide a mounting for a propeller 5 arranged so that when the propeller is swung about a transverse axis 7 from the forwardflight position (dotted lines) to the vertical flight position (full lines) the downwardlydirected airflows from the propeller discs are clear of the leading edges of the wings. To counteract the upward pitching moment resulting from this arrangement the booms 3 carry pivotal supports for an elevator 4 and a further rotor 9 is mounted on the elevator in the central longitudinal plane of the aircraft to be swung in unison with the propellers 5. The unbalanced torque resulting from the use of three propellers or rotors is compensated by inclining to horizontal planes the axes about which the propellers 5 and the elevator 4 are swung. A further embodiment is described in which this unbalanced torque is avoided by the use of four propellers.
