Abstract

797,019. Convertible aircraft. MIGNOT, G. L. G. M. Nov. 18, 1955 [Nov. 30, 1954], No. 33121/55. Class 4. An aircraft which may be convertible from vertical flight as a helicopter to forward flight as a normal aircraft comprises a fuselage 1 and a propeller 2 for forward flight along the axis XX. The fuselage carries a tiltable rotary disc 3 which, as shown in Fig. 7, supports a plurality of blades 4 each having a cylindrical end 8 mounted for radial movement in a tubular housing 7. Each end 8 has a pivotal connection 9 with a rod 11 which at its other end carries a piston 12 housed within a cylinder 13. The rods 11 are arranged in vertically overlapping rela. tionship and the blades 4 are extended or retracted by admission of compressed air to the appropriate ends of cylinders 13. An antitorque tail rotor 5 is provided. For take-off the blades 4 are extended as shown in Fig. 1 and the aircraft takes off substantially vertically as a helicopter, though the direction of thrust of the rotor may be inclined by tilting of disc 3. At a selected altitude power from the single engine (not shown) is transferred from the lifting rotor to the propeller 2 and the blades 4 are retracted so that the disc 3 acts as a conventional lifting aerofoil. To reduce resistance during vertical ascent the disc 3 may be provided with apertures closed by flaps in forward flight.
