Abstract
1,175,073. Convertiplane. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. 11 Dec., 1967 [29 Dec., 1966], No. 58237/66. Heading B7G and B7W. A convertiplane 10 comprises a rotor 13 for substantially vertical flight and wings 11 for horizontal flight, the rotor being convertible to a propeller for relatively low speed horizontal flight, the rotor blades 16 being stowable within or against the aircraft structure (e.g. as shown at 22 in recesses 20 on a rotor head nacelle 24), the rotor being driven by a gas turbine power plant 18 capable with the wing of supporting the aircraft for high speed flight when the rotor blades are in their stowed positions. The rotor drive may include clutches 17, 19 and a synchronizing shaft 23. The rotors 13 may be of variable diameter, the blades 16 being movable along screwed blade spars 21. The plane may include electric or fluid power means for stopping the rotors 13 rotating and for folding the blades. .
