Abstract

1,111,215. V.T.O.L. aircraft. BÍLKOW G.m.b.H. 26 Jan., 1966 [2 Feb., 1965], No 3571/66. Headings B7G and B7W. A V.T.O.L. fixed-wing aircraft is propelled in forward flight by gas turbine engines 3 mounted above each wing 2 within extensions of nacelles 4 suspended below the wing. The front and rear end of each nacelle carries a lifting rotor 5 positioned as shown for take-off and landing and driven by a turbine 12, Fig. 2, in turn driven by jet gas from engine 3 diverted by a deflector 9, the turbines being connected to each other and to the rotors by gearing and shafting 17, 20, 22. The underside of each nacelle is provided with retractable slats 21 and during forward flight, with the jet gases directed rearwardly, the rotor blades are folded and swung into retracted positions within the nacelle. The jet propulsion engines and rotor-driving turbines may be housed within the fuselage and connected to the rotors by extended shafting and gearing.
