Abstract

1,199,923. V.T.O.L. aircraft. A. H. ORR. 2 Aug., 1967 [2 Aug., 1966; 14 March, 1967], Nos. 34545/66 and 11977/67. Headings B7G and B7W. An aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing has a wing comprising an outer casing 13 surrounding an aerofoil 12 so that a duct is formed through which air is discharged rearwardly from a duct 9 over the aerofoil to generate lift. The air is controlled at the trailing edge by adjustable flaps 25, 27 and an independent propulsion unit 8 is provided to react the thrust of the discharged air. In Figs. 2 and 3 a fuselage 80 has a pylon 84 supporting a wing of the plan form shown which encloses two coaxial contrarotating fans 61, 62 enclosed within a casing 83 that surrounds a part-annular aserfoil 65, the fans discharging air over the lifting aerofoil for discharge from a duct 60 which is formed with a plurality of control flaps 91. The fans are driven from gas turbine engines 82 which propel the aircraft in forward flight, when flaps 97 close off the air intake apertures for the fans.
