Aeroplanes,. helicopters and machines supported by rotary propellers; starting; stopping way; propelling; controlling. - An aeroplane is provided with one or more horizontal lifting airscrews adapted to be rotated when taking-off or landing by energy derived from the slipstream of one or more propelling airscrews. Fig. 1 shows an aeroplane having a fuselage 4 and propelling airscrew 6 normally supported in flight by wings 5. A horizontal airscrew 7 is mounted on a spindle 8 supported in bearings in the fuselage and coupled to the rotor of an air turbine 9 having an intake 11 and discharge pipe 10. Hinged annular baffles 13, 14 under the control of the pilot are arranged in the space between the fuselage 4 and an open-ended guide cylinder 12 in such a manner that when closed they direct the slipstream from the airscrew 6 to the intake 11 of the turbine 9. When the baffles 13, 14 are open they lie parallel with the guide cylinder and fuselage respectively permitting the free passage of air therebetween. Alternatively one or more baffles arranged to direct the slipstream directly to the lifting airscrew may be employed in lieu of the air turbine. When more than one lifting airscrew is provided they are arranged symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the aeroplane. Specification 28907/10 is referred to.
