Abstract
618,475. Rotary-wing aircraft. SOC. ANON. DES ATELIERS D'AVIATION L. BREGUET. Aug. 27, 1946, No. 25557. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1941. [Class 4] A rotary wing aircraft with coaxial contrarotating lifting rotors and non-flapping blades of symmetrical or auto-stable section, i.e. with the centre of pressure located to the rear of the pitch-changing axis, is provided with differential means connecting the respective blade systems to enable the blade pitch to be varied automatically in response to the aerodynamic forces acting on the blades, and also to be adjusted by the pilot to control the aircraft. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the swash-plates 6, 6<SP>1</SP> for effecting the cyclical pitch control of the blades 1, 2 are operated by a spider 14 connected to the control lever 30 by linkages 31, 32, 33 and 34, 35, 36, the arms of the spider being connected to the swash-plates by differential linkages 12, 13, 12<SP>1</SP>. Rack-and-pinions, Fig. 4 (not shown), may be substituted for the linkages. A lever 37 controls the collective pitch setting through rack and pinion 40, 42, the pinion engaging with splines 41 on the rotor shaft 16. Steering is effected by differential pitch variation of the respective rotor blades, through the rudder bar 43 which is connected to the inner rotor shaft 46. Fig. 10 shows an arrangement by which the blade pitch is automatically varied in accordance with air speed, the setting of the member 13 of the differential linkage being controlled by a capsule 53 connected to a venturi tube 54.
