Abstract

375,530. Aeroplane. CROWE, J. K., Verulam Lodge, Brough, East Yorkshire. June 10, 1931, No. 16848. [Class 4.] An aeroplane of the type in which the fuselage and wing system are freely pivoted to one another has the fuselage suspended beneath the lifting surfaces and hinged about an axis passing substantially through its centres of gravity and of aerodynamic resistance, the lifting surfaces comprising wings and tail unit connected together by outriggers and connected with the fuselage by angularly disposed struts and by at least one rearwardly disposed telescopic strut at the rear of the fuselage. The fuselage a is connected to the main plane assembly, which comprises wings c connected by braced outriggers e to a tail unit d, by means of a transverse shaft j mounted in bearings k, k within the fuselage to the ends of which shaft are connected Vee-struts b connected at their upper ends to wings c. Shaft j passes through the centre of gravity of the fuselage and its contained load. Struts b pass through slots n in the fuselage sides and carry flange fairing pieces o which underlie the slots n. An engine g is carried on planes c. Fuselage a is connected to the outriggers e by a telescopic strut or struts g which may contain a dash-pot and may be manually adjustable in length. An undercarriage comprising wheels r may be retractable, automatically, control being effected by relative movement between wing unit and fuselage. The control surface may be operated by rods or cables extending through guides on the inside or outside of struts b. The fuselage itself is fitted with a stabilizing plane p which may embody Flettner servo-surfaces and may be controlled through a servo by a gyroscope. The wings may be fitted with Handley-Page slots. According to modifications the pilot's cockpit may be fitted on the lifting assembly, the fuselage carrying goods or passengers only. The power unit may be installed on the fuselage. The machine may be a biplane and the fuselage of the seaplane type.
