[Class 4] A compound aeroplane comprises a main aircraft element and an auxiliary aircraft element adapted to contribute lift in excess of its own weight and rigidly but releasably attached above the main aircraft so that they both assist in enabling the compound aeroplane to take off and climb and thereafter by merely releasing the attachments the elements become separated as a result of the air forces acting thereon. As shown, the main aeroplane 1 is designed for long range flight at high speeds with a large load and the auxiliary aeroplane 9 which carries only a light load is a biplane of normal single engine design suitable for carrying large loads with a moderate wing loading. The two components are releasably connected together at points 17, 20, the points 17 being on the undercarriages of the aeroplane 9 and above the undercarriage of the aeroplane 1, and the point 20 being situated on the longitudinal centre of the elements and approximately midway between their wings and tails. The compound aeroplane can be controlled by one of the pilots of the two elements : (a) by interconnecting the controls of the two machines ; (b) by connections released simultaneously with the main connections ; or (c) by locking the controls of one machine in a neutral position, or leaving the control surfaces free to float, the other machine being provided with abnormally large control surfaces to control the compound machine. Either component may be a monoplane, biplane, or multiplane machine and wing slots and flaps may be provided for increasing lift. The engines of the aeroplane 1 may be of supercharged to give their maximum power at a desired altitude. Guide members may be provided at the tail or both the tail and wing tips to control the initial separation, on release of the attachments. The compound aeroplane may take off from a driven and guided trolley.
