Abstract
546,588. Aeroplanes. BURNEY, Sir C. D. Aug. 9, 1941, No. 10156. [Class 4] A high speed aeroplane, designed for use as a satellite aircraft in conjunction with a carrier aircraft as described in Specification 546,587, comprises a fuselage with main planes 3, tail planes, and airscrews 9, rotating in opposite directions at the extreme rear end of the aeroplane. The fuselage is fitted with a hook 20 to facilitate re-engagement with the carrier aircraft. The engine for driving the airscrews acts as a strut between the wings, or as a tie in the case of wings set higher up the fuselage. A releaseable trap door may be provided in the floor to enable the pilot to escape, or, as shown, the whole front of the fuselage may be pivoted at 11 so as to turn downwardly when hooks 12 are released by pressing a pedal. To assist control of the aircraft it may be fitted with elevators and rudders at its forward end in addition to the rear control planes. For use on a landing ground the aeroplane may be fitted with retractable wheels near the front and rear ends, and the main plane 3 may be variable in incidence or be provided with camber-varying flaps.
