Abstract
525,015. Composite aircraft. VICKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and ELLIS, D. L. Feb. 11, 1939, No. 4543. [Class 4] To assist the taking off of a main aeroplane, an auxiliary aircraft adapted to be connected to the main aircraft is provided with means for producing suction or pressure in boundary control openings in the upper surface of the wings or flaps of the main aircraft, or of the main and auxiliary aircrafts. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the auxiliary aircraft 2 is connected to the main aircraft 15 by its fixed,landing wheels 3 which fit in the nacelles 16 of the main aircraft and are detachably secured thereto, and by a hollow member 5 releasably attached to the main aircraft. Air is drawn through control openings 12 in flaps 13, Fig. 3, by a blower 7 driven by an auxiliary engine 6, and is passed through the member 5 to control openings 9 in flaps 10 of the main aircraft. The main aircraft may have retractable wheels 17 and be mounted on a detachable six-wheeled trolley 18 having an engine 20. The trolley may be detached from the main aircraft by catches acting automatically, and may be provided with automatic brakes, or it may be brought to rest by an operator riding on it. The invention may be applied to seaplanes.
