Abstract

[Class 4.] Aeroplanes ; controlling; planes, construction of.-A tail-less aeroplane comprises a single wing of which the centre portion is of symmetrical section and outer portions have a stable profile of the type having a reflex trailing edge. Control of pitch is effected by an elevator hinged to the trailing edge of the centre section. Control of yaw is effected by surfaces normally housed within and extensible from the wing tips, Figs. 5 and 6, alternatively surfaces nested upon the upper and lower surfaces of the wing may be projected outwardly to produce an excess of drag on one side or the other of the machine. Lateral control is effected by ailerons of the type described in Specification 290,300, [Class 4, Aeronautics], consisting of two surfaces hinged to one another, Fig. 5. When the airscrew is mounted above the plane, a reversed camber aerofoil is mounted at the trailing edge, Fig. 7, in the slipstream and is arranged to tilt proportionately to the thrust, this surface is mounted obliquely with respect to the plane of the wing to compensate for the propeller torque at cruising speed. Stopping way.-For landing and taking off, the drag of the machine is increased by air-brakes normally nested on the plane, and/or by extending the rudder surfaces simultaneously, the balance connections between them being extensible. Wheel brakes, application of ; starting; land wheels, runners, and skids.-A wheeled tail skid is fitted which can be depressed to raise the rear of the machine for starting and manoeuvring on the ground. When a wheeled under-carriage and tail skid are fitted the rearmost set of wheels are braked, this braking being made dependant upon the tail skid and/or the front set of wheels.
