757,255. Launching aircraft. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 6, 1955 [May 7, 1954], No. 13480/54. Class 4. Apparatus to facilitate the takeoff of an aircraft 2 provided with a nose wheel 1 and main landing skids 3 comprises a trolley 8 mounted on one pair of front wheels 9 and two pairs of rear wheels 17. When the aircraft is not mounted on the trolley the wheels 9 are retracted by jacks 20 so that the trolley rests on castors 22 and the wheels 17. The means for attaching the aircraft to the trolley comprise a telescopic strut 6 having a latch 7 for connection to the fuselage and arms 11 connected to the rear undercarriage by latches 10. The arms 11 are mounted on the trolley by mutually perpendicular pivots 12, 16 and they are raised to the position shown by a pair of jacks 19, to which they are connected by latches 21 to raise the skids 3 from the ground. When the aircraft approaches the speed of flight the strut 6 is extended and when the aircraft reaches a predetermined angle of ncidence the latch 7 releases and the strut 6 is ietracted on to the trolley. At the same time the latches 21 are released to enable arms 11 to rise until the latches 10 are automatically disengaged. The arms 11 are then folded inwards about the pivots 16 by a linkage, not shown. When the aircraft has left the trolley, the brakes are applied asymmetrically in order to steer the trolley off the runway. The skids 3 are provided with braking sprags and when the aircraft is mounted on the trolley these are connected with the trolley brakes so that the pilot has full control in the event of emergency during take-off.
