Abstract

556,325. Aircraft undercarriages. GRIFFITHS, E. J. March 31, 1942, No. 4301. [Class 4] A pair of landing wheels 9, 10 for supporting the tail of an aeroplane is carried by a pair of struts 1, 2 connected together by transverse struts 3, 4, 14 braced to form a rigid frame which is supported by members 11, 12 pivoted about a horizontal axis 13 for retracting the landing wheels, the frame being vertically adjustable to two positions in the members 11, 12 to suit landing and take-off conditions. The struts 1, 2 are rotatable in the frame for steering the wheels. A stay 15 connected to one of the cross members of the frame is slidable in a pivoted sleeve 17 to which it can be locked in three positions to support the frame in either of its two extended positions or in its retracted position. The frame is locked to the fuselage in its landing and take-off position by spring loaded bolts 21 engaging blocks 23 on the fuselage and operable by solenoids, the frame being movable by a cable. The stay 15 is locked to the sleeve 17 by a member 19 engaging teeth on the stay and operable by a spring-loaded solenoid. The lower parts of the struts 1, 2 include shock-absorbers 7, 8. The struts 1, 2 have keyways engaged by projections on levers 24 pivoted in the members 11, 12 and connected by a rod 26, Fig. 4, a cable 25 enabling the wheels to be steered by rotating the struts 1, 2 in either of their operative positions. The wheels are retracted into their inoperative position by turning the members 11, 12 about the axis 13.
