Abstract
398,411. Retractable undercarriages. DORNIER METALLBAUTEN GES. and DORNIER, C., Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance, Germany. Feb. 23, 1933, No. 5591. Convention date, April 26, 1932. [Class 4.] A retractable landing-gear for aircraft comprises pivoted wheelcarrying members the fulcra of which are carried by a nut or threaded sleeve adapted to travel on a vertical screw - spindle mounted in the plane of symmetry of the aircraft. In one form, Fig. 1, wheels l, k are carried by members g, h, pivoted in trunnions carried by a nut e vertically movable on a spindle c rotatable through handwheel d. The wheels have dished endplates o which may be arranged to close apertures in the fuselage a when the wheels are retracted to the dotted line position. Wheels i, k are maintained in operative position by a resilient member l which may comprise multiple strands of elastic or be a tension member with inserted springs m, n, and by ropes q arranged in forwardly and rearwardly-inclined pairs and secured within wing b at points s. The ropes pass over pulleys r which are laterally movable by cables u, w to bring ropes q into the dotted line positions when the wheels are retracted. In a modification, Fig. 2, the shock-absorbing means comprise struts o<1> having their upper anchorages slidable in guides r<1> and secured in operative position by wedges s<1>. The lower ends of pivoted struts g<1>, h<1> are articulated to wheel-carrying members p<1> to which the lower ends of struts o<1> are rigidly secured.
