Abstract
348,946. Glider and ornithopter. SIECK, H. A. F., 24, Princes Avenue, Liverpool. July 5, 1930, No. 20469. [Class 4.] A machine is provided with hinged wing portions pivoted to fixed inner portions projecting from the fuselage, and with means for flapping the hinged portions when required. The hinged portions may be locked in a fixed position for gliding. Two wing portions 8 having a negative incidence at the tips and a positive incidence at the roots are hinged to the ends of stub surfaces 5 braced to the fuselage by struts 6. The portions 8 are hinged at 15 to pairs of convergent rods 14 pivoted to collars 14a on the ends of an axle 16 carrying landing wheels, floats or skis. The axle 16 is carried by pillars 19 passing through roller guides in the fuselage and provided with stops 21, 22 and cushioning springs 25. The pillars 19 can be reciprocated by a treadle hinged to one of them and arranged adjacent to a fixed platform in the fuselage so that the pilot can throw his weight on to one or the other. A clamping device acting on the other pillar 19 may fix the wings in position for gliding. The hinge line of the wings is arranged below the surface so that the edges of the portions 8 abut against the edges of the stub surfaces should the connections to the undercarriage fail. Alternatively a fixed landing carriage may be provided and the rods 14 connected to a separate transverse rod. Additional planes or wings may be secured to the tops of the pillars 19 or to the axle 16 or to both.
