Abstract

338,348. Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, Ltd., Sir W. G., and Lloyd, J. Nov. 6. 1929. Planes, construction of, and connecting to machine; land wheels; propelling.-A monoplane is braced by depending V-sbaped struts 4 attached to each wing at approximately 30 per cent of the semi-span from the body 2, the strut being cross-braced to the top and bottom of the body by wires 5, 6 also arranged in vees; lift wires 7 extend from the bottom of each strut to a point about 60 per cent of the semi-span from the body, and the bottom ends of the struts are connected by a tension member 8. The struts 4 may support or locate part of a landing gear comprising wheels 13, carried by a centrally jointed axle 14 and enshrouded by fairings 12 carried by the lower ends of the struts. The axes of the propellers are arranged in the wings, as shown, so that the bracing is largely unaffected by the slipstream therefrom.
